Helleborus.
For the gardener, collector and landscape designer, these are of particular interest, providing blooms during the winter months and attractive evergreen foliage for most of the year. The Helleborus hybridus group are easy to cultivate, dry tolerant, long-lived and require nothing more than a partially shaded spot in the garden. Extensive trials of seed-raised plants and careful breeding has led to strains of single blooms in a range of clear colours, as well as picotees, anemone centres, and doubles, previously unavailable to the home gardener. Note: seedlings will vary slightly but a high proportion will be as good as the parents, if not better!

Helleborus argutifolius

Flowers from the parent had an unusual darker veining, almost marbling over the lighter pink background, with dark purple nectaries. I am confident these seedlings will produce some stunning plants, and I am sure some doubles will appear amongst them. Part sun to shade. 50 cm.

$6.50

Helleborus hybridus ‘Anemone Pink’

Helleborus hybridus ‘Anemone Pink’. An experimental cross using our anemone purple as the seed parent with pollen from ’Betty Ranicar’. The result will be variations of double pinks, purples, whites, and anemone intermediates. Part sun to shade. 60 cm.

$9.50

Helleborus hybridus ‘Green’

Helleborus hybridus ‘Green’. This is a very unstable colour to reproduce, and I’m still finding a few pinks and whites in these, which is extremely annoying! Still, as my obligation to lovers of green flowers, I’m listing these in the hope that you might find some nice green flowered plants amongst them! Part sun to shade. 50 cm.

Hosta.
A shade loving genus from China, predominantly found on forest margins and in deep shade under trees. They will take surprisingly dry conditions, providing they are protected from wind and sun, and also grow well in containers. Hostas are generally cultivated for their attractive leaf variations and are suitable for mass plantings with Helleborus hybridus, dicentra and shade-loving geraniums. Heights given are for foliage; flowers generally stand a further 20 - 40cm above the leaves.
