Geranium
The cranesbills are a genus of extremely garden-worthy plants and a favourite at this nursery. We have trialled the following varieties in the garden and find them excellent ground-covers, prolific and lengthy flowerers, vigorous and adaptable to a wide range of conditions.In hot climates we recommend part shade for most varieties.
Geranium ‘Criss Canning’ Geranium ‘Criss Canning’. One of the best Geranium pratense crosses I’ve come across, flowering all through summer with lovely dark blue flowers reminiscent of Geranium himalayense. Compact shape and long-flowering. Geranium cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’ Geranium cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’. A cross between Geranium dalmaticum and G. macrorrhizum with good ground-covering habit and compact growth. A useful landscaping plant which looks tidy for most of the year. The flowers are white to pale pink and held well above the evergreen green foliage. Also good in pots. Geranium phaeum Geranium phaeum. One of the best species for shade, this variety will naturalise in time making a good clump from its perennial rootstock. The flowers are a deep purple burgundy and are produced in early spring. Part sun to shade. 35 cm. $5.00
Geranium phaeum Geranium renardii. A neat plant from the Caucasus popular for its velvety rounded leaves. The flowers are white with pronounced purple veins produced during the summer months. Dryish conditions in the rockgarden or border. Part sun to full sun. 15 cm. $6.50

Helleborus
Helleborus hybridus are easy to cultivate, dry tolerant, long-lived and require nothing more than a partially shaded spot in the garden. We find our plants do better if they get some winter sunlight, and this helps with general hygene and appearance of the plant. Cut off old leaves as new flowers emerge.
Helleborus argutifolius Helleborus argutifolius. Wonderful shrubby species from Corsica with clusters of apple-green flowers. Will grow well in dry shade beneath trees. Part sun to shade. 120 cm. 3 for $15 $6.50

Heuchera ‘Firefly’ Heuchera ‘Firefly’. A ground govering variety with coral red flowers in spring on wiry stems. Good for floral work and easy amongst geraniums and campanulas. Part sun to full sun. 60cm. $6.50
Heuchera americana Heuchera americana. Native of North America growing on forest margins, forming good spreading groundcover. Evergreen foliage and cream bells, extremely cold hardy. Part sun to full sun. 80 cm. $5.50

Hosta
A shade loving genus from China, predominantly found on forest margins and in deep shade under trees. They will take surprisingly dry conditions, providing they are protected from wind and sun, and also grow well in containers. Hostas are generally cultivated for their attractive leaf variations and are suitable for mass plantings with Helleborus hybridus, dicentra and shade-loving geraniums. Heights given are for foliage; flowers generally stand a further 20 - 40cm above the leaves.

Iris
Brian Mathew says of these elegant plants: “To describe the iris in a few lines is quite impossible...” A glimpse of this diverse and beautiful genus is represented here in the following varieties. Most are easily grown in a range of heavy to well drained soils.
Iris ‘Dark Aura’ Iris ‘Dark Aura’. A spectacular iris with indigo flowers and black stems. Medium height and suitable in most conditions providing the soil is not too dry. Part sun to full sun. 90 cm. $7.50

Iris chrysographes Iris chrysographes. The darkest iris, almost black in colour. Best in a wet pond margin or damp clay soil. Upright foliage like siberian iris. Requires moisture. 80 cm. $7.50
