Kniphofia
A spectacular and diverse genus of South African plants, grown widely for their flowers and evergreen foliage. Otherwise known as ‘Red Hot Pokers’, kniphofias are available in a variety of colours from white to lime-green, yellow, orange and deep red. They are all easily cultivated in full sun on most soil types, and have recently risen in popularity for their drought hardiness. Companion plants could include agaves, yuccas, eryngiums, carex and miscanthus.

Kniphofia ‘Wols Red’ Kniphofia ‘Wols Red’. I spotted this dwarf poker in the UK years ago where I was struck by its compact form & abundant hot-orange pokers. It is winter dormant and makes a good grassy mound of leaves when not in flower. Part sun to full sun. 60cm. $7.50
Kniphofia brachystachys Kniphofia brachystachys. A rare species of kniphofia with narrow blackish purple flowers. The spikes start out as lime green then darken as the spike develops, creating an unusual colour combination. Full sun. 80 cm. $6.50
Kniphofia buchananii Kniphofia buchananii. A wonderful species from Natal with narrow foliage and slender white flowers almost like a liatris. Unlike any other poker i have seen. Full sun. 100 cm. $6.50
Kniphofia hirsuta Kniphofia hirsuta. The most dwarf of our pokers with flattish foliage only up to 20cm or so. Attractive lime and orange bi-coloured pokers, best in dry conditions. Full sun. 40cm. $8.50
Kniphofia northiae Kniphofia northiae. A spectacular species forming a huge rosette of Aloe-like leaves up to 1.2 m across. A decorative foliage plant in mass plantings with other bold foliage plants like Furcraea roezlii and Aeonium ‘Schwarzkopf’. The dramatic coral pokers are an added bonus when they arrive. Miscanthus
Miscanthus are used widely for their tall grassy foliage, which is popular both in perennial border plantings and formal designs. Most are virtually evergreen, however we find cutting back to ground level beneficial every few years .

Paeonia
Paeonies have long been treasured by florists for their sumptous colour and lasting qualities. The smaller herbaceous mediterranean species are very beautiful and ideally suit our dry summer climate. Generally speaking the herbaceous varieties prefer to be moist and cool in winter,then gradually dry off over Summer after flowering. Most like neutral to alkaline soils and medium drainage with some deeper clay underfoot to prevent completely drying out.

Paeonia cambesdesii Paeonia cambesdesii. A very rare species from Majorca, with beautiful pewter leaves and pink flowers. Paeonia tenuifolia Paeonia tenuifolia. A wild Paeonia found only in Hungary, Ukraine and Romania with deep tomato red flowers and finely disected foliage. Papaver
Oriental poppies are extremely rewarding and showy, flowering prolifically in early summer with impressive cupped blooms in a range of pinks, oranges, whites and reds. In cooler districts, established clumps will continue to flower well into winter if cut back hard after flowering in summer. We find these poppies easy to grow on both loam and clay soils, responding well to mulch and composted horse manure. Avoid acidic soil below pH 6.
Papaver ‘Brilliant’ Papaver ‘Brilliant’. The orange oriental perennial poppy, originally from Turkey. The blooms are impressive, and in good conditions the plant will make a large perennial clump in only a few years. Remove the first flower and avoid acid soils. Penstemon
An ornamental group of herbaceous and woody perennials from North America with colourful flowers; often red, blue or purple. Generally speaking, Penstemons are tough plants and will withstand dry summers, however prefer drained soil particularly in wet winter areas.

Primula
A long cultivated genus of mostly alpines, that requires some care and knowledge to grow sucessfully. Basically, many of the alpine species grow wild on limestone, so don’t last long in potting mix or acid soils. To overcome this add dolomite and potash to your soil or potting mix and dont overwater.
