Effective ground covering plant with blue flowers and glossy foliage. Combine with alchemillas, epimediums, hellebores and pachysandra.
Spreading species from Ethiopia, useful for ground-cover in larger gardens. Suckers like a wild strawberry when happy, prefers part shade or clay based moisture-retentive soils.
The lush green leaves resemble the foliage of a Hosta and look great in mass plantings beneath trees. New Zealand native with sprays of starry white flowers in summer.
Spectacular climber with lime bells followed by purple berries. Trim at early stage to maintain bushy habit and abundant flowering. Native to Tasmania in eucalyptus under-storey, often found with Clematis aristata and Pomaderris elliptica.
Somewhat rampant if treated too well but extremely useful for colonising dry shady areas where not much else will grow. Makes an attractive weed-smothering clump of glossy foliage followed by plentiful lime-green flowers in late winter.
White form of this excellent ground cover for shade, flowers age to very pale pink. Easily grown under trees where it favours dryish soil once established.
White hydrangea, rounded clusters, vigorous and long flowering, colour not effected by soil pH.
White flowered 'mop top' old fashioned macrophylla variety, vigorous and won't change colour with pH variation. Perfect in shade, grows best with some drainage.
Medium hydrangea with large heads of blue lacecaps. Note all blue hydrangea need acid soil to produce correct colouring; in alkaline soil they will tend toward pink.
Old fashioned blue mop top hydrangea, needs acid soil to colour up well. Will go towards pink in alkaline soil.
Deep pink hydrangea, flatter lacecap type like 'Tokyo Delight'; note pink varieties are less affected by soil pH than blue varieties.
White lace cap variety, flatter flowers with lilac centre buds; stable colour and lovely.
Japanese woodland species with climbing habit. Prefers drained peaty soil and sun protection, ideal for southern wall or trellis.
A useful landscaping plant for dry areas in shade or part-sun. Interesting orange berries after flowering and evergreen leaves.
Ornamental bronze tinged foliage plant for pond margins and clay soils; associates well with gunnera, filipendula, and Iris. Best in part shade, native to China and Japan.
Remarkable double white parma violet, sweetly perfumed and delicious. Plant as ground cover in shade under trees, combine with helleborus, anemone, dicentra, and epimedium. Similar to 'Swanley White' but as we have collected these from different sources we have listed separately.
Purple violet moptop macrophylla type, can tend towards deep pink in less acid soils; rich colours.
Can often be bicoloured, blue and purple depending on soil pH. Fluffy rounded flower heads, vigorous long flowering.
Black mondo grass. Popular for its glossy black foliage and evergreen carpeting effect. Easily grown but slower in cold climates.
Faded lilac purple, like old velvet. Subtle colour lovely in drifts with other varieties for tapestry of colours.
