A soft ochre orange, brighter than 'Terracotta' and softer than 'Paprika'. The yarrows have so many lovely colour variations its hard to know where to stop with these!
Vigorous herb which needs to be sited with consideration, like comfrey. Grows a bit too well from root cuttings, but worth having in the kitchen garden.
A dense growing multi stemmed variety prized for topiary and hedging, featured at Sissinghurst Castle. Bright blue flowers.
The original european wild strawberry, excellent as ground cover in shade or part sun. Small sweetly flavoured fruit and white flowers.
One of the earliest fruiting varieties, with tall vigorous growth habit to 2.1m. Once established, prune out central canes to keep bush open. As with most blueberries, fruit production is improved by planting other varieties nearby. Sweet fruit which stores and freezes well, perfect for jams, pies, or just eaten fresh.
Tasmannia lanceolata. Cutting grown female plants for berry production, grow in part shade in moisture retentive soil. Will grow into small tree once established.
Soft primrose yellow yarrow, good for floral work and cottage gardens. Easy to grow, perennial. Also referred to in herbal medicine, said to aid in the relief of colds and chest complaints.
Prostrate wooly thyme only 1 cm high, plant as lawn or amongst stones, gravel or pavers for ground cover.
Low growing mounding variety with finely dissected silver foliage for perennial border or amongst roses. Herbaceous habit makes it compatible with bulbs and other low growing perennials.
Tangy lemon flavour and fragrance, add to stuffing, stew, and marinades. Also useful as ground cover in cottage garden or border plantings.
The most flavoursome variety of peppermint, used commonly for tea and oil production. Used medicinally for overcoming nausea and sickness, an easy variety for part shade.
Ancient long cultivated food plant which provides delicious berries as well as leaves that can be used for tea and medicinal purposes. Easy to grow.
Horseradish, useful perennial for moist soils. Easy to grow and can sprout from roots, so position carefully.
Close relative of Echinacea angustifolia, also used in herbal medicine, sharing many similarities. I find it a better garden plant, more vigorous and productive in growth, and manages better in winter wet.
Common "meadowsweet", an attractive perennial for damp soil with dozens of medicinal and culinary uses. The white fluffy flowers can be added sparingly to jam and stewed fruit, and can be used to flavour wine, beer and cordials. The root is also used in varied herbal remedies.
